Novel semi-rigid, chiral macrocycles consisting of two electronically interacting arylene chromophores and two chiral spiroindane clips were synthesized. Solutions of these molecules were observed to show circular dichroisms, which can be interpreted by the exciton-coupling-theory, together with ab initio MO calculation. The results provide us with valuable information to understand the exceptional chiroptical properties of chiral polyfluorenes in absorption and photo- and electroluminescence.
