In recent years dendrimers are the subject of increasing experimental and theoretical interest because of various open questions in fundamental research and a broad range of potential applications in biology, chemistry, and physics. After a short review of the basic structural and dynamical properties we present a theoretical investigation of the energy transport in and optical absorption of dendrimers. To that end we model the hyperbranched molecule by an ensemble of two-level systems. The molecules are interacting with each other via transfer integrals taking into account the specific spatial structure of the dendrimers. The influence of the phonons is considered by allowing for fluctuations of the local excitation energies and of the transfer matrix elements. We calculat the optical absorption line shape for dendrimers of various sizes and discuss the spatial distribution of the excitation energy as a function of the dendrimer size. Furthermore, the time dependence of the coupled coherent and incoherent energy transport is discussed for several initial energy distributions.
