A new, universally valid scheme to interpret excited states is developed which probes the excitonic nature of such states.
The scheme is applied to excited states of ladder-type paraphenylene oligomers which have been calculated along with their ground state properties with semiempirical methods The oligomers comprised up to eleven phenylene rings.
All optical relevant states can be interpreted as bound electron-hole pairs. The electron-hole pair with the lowest energy has a mean distance of approximately 4 Å.
