Inter- and Intrachain Structure of Poly(p-phenylene-vinylene) — •Stefan Forero Lenger, Jürgen Gmeiner, Marian Tzolov und Wolfgang Brütting — Experimental Physik II Universität Bayreuth, 95440 Bayreuth
On the basis of previous investigations related to molecular vibrations and electronic excitations in precursor route poly(p-phenylene-vinylene) (PPV) and its derivatives we present a comparative investigation of both the homopolymer (hPPV) and an acetate substituted copolymer derivative (aPPV). We carried out in situ FT-IR and UV-vis and ex situ Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy as a function of conversion temperature and film thickness. The results reveal the significant influence of polymer chain structure on the optical characteristics. Structural elements like chain torsion, conjugation, chemical substitution and interchain distance are found to be the main parameters controlling vibrational and electronic transitions. Our experiments show how the polymers evolve structurally as the conversion process advances.
