Spin-conversion of methyl groups observed by UV holeburning in p-chlorotoluene — •Martin Pinsker and Josef Friedrich — Lehrstuhl für Physik Weihenstephan, TU München, Vöttinger Straße 40, 85350 Freising, Germany
We performed holeburning experiments in the UV with p-chlorotoluene as a probe in a cyclohexane matrix. The holeburning mechanism is exclusively based on a light-induced change of the total nuclear spin of the methyl group. By measuring the recovery of the hole as a function of temperature we were able to observe nuclear spin conversion relaxation between 3 and 8 K. It is governed by a Raman process. The associated lattice temperature is about 38 K.
