Amplified spontaneous emission in spiro-type molecular glasses — •Meike Schörner, Thomas Fuhrmann, and Josef Salbeck — Makromolekulare Chemie und Molekulare Materialien, Fachbereich Physik, Uni-GH Kassel, Heinrich-Plett-Str. 40, 34109 Kassel

Solid-state organic laser materials have a high potential for applications in low-cost, environment-friendly optoelectronic devices. In this contribution, we present experiments on stimulated emission processes in thin films of higher branched spiro-type oligophenyls. For different chromophores, the threshold of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), the linewidths and peak wavelengths in the blue spectral range are measured. The thickness dependence of the threshold intensity corresponds to predictions from waveguide theory. In nitrogen atmospheres the films are stable, whereas in air photodegradation occurs. The kinetics of this photodegradation depend on the degree of spiro linking.
