The size of free-volume holes in poly((ethylene glycol)23 dimethacrylate) without and with 0.6 mol/kg LiCF3SO3 is studied as a function of the temperature in the range 100 K to 370 K using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Below Tg = 240 K the hole volume of the polymer electrolyte is larger than in the neat polymer, while in the rubbery phase the situation reverses. Starting from the free-volume theory of Cohen-Turnbull, the ionic conductivity sigma is correlated with the mean hole volume v. A linear relation between log(sigma) and 1/v was observed to be valid for a variation of sigma over six orders of magnitudes. The VTF parameters and activation volume were determined.
