Polyelectrolyte Multilyers at different Adsorption Temperatures — •Karsten Büscher1,2, Karlheinz Graf2,1, and Christiane A. Helm11Angewandte Physik, Universität Greifswald — 2Institut für Physikal. Chemie, Universität Mainz

The alternate adsorption of anionic und kationic polyelectrolytes (PE) is a preparation method developed by G. Decher in 1991. Organic layers with nanoscopic control can be produced, which is important from an applied point of view. But the parameters, which control the layer structure are not yet completely understand. We presents PE-multilayers of poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and poly(allyaminhydrochloride) (PAH) on functionalized glass substrates. PEs of different chain length are adsorbed from solutions with varying salt concentrations (0-2 M) and adsorption temperatures (5-50 degree C). It is well known that PEs adsorbed from high salt solutions forms thicker films due to coiled adsorption. X-ray reflection measurements of films, adsorbed between 5 and 20 degree C from high salt, show an increase of the layer thickness, then saturation occurs, accompanied by a higher roughness. The results of the x-ray reflection are correlated with the PSS coverage determinated by UV-vis measurements. The solvent quality of water decreases at higher temperatures, explaining the thickness increase of the adsorbed layers.
