It is well known that silane coupling agent bis(3-triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide (Si69) contains functional groups that can react with the rubber and silica. In this way the distribution of the filler particles in the rubber matrix is improved and the reinforcing effect of silica is enhanced. Butyl rubber (IIR) crosslinked by sulfur and TMTD reinforced with variable silica content with and without Si69 was investigated with broadband dielectric spectroscopy, dynamic mechanical measurements and tensile tests. While the dielectric glass relaxation process is not affected by the addition of filler, the low frequency dielectric loss is greatly increased and the influence of Si69 is clearly seen. Measurements of the frequency dependance of the shear compliance show two relaxation processes which strongly depend on filler content, Si69 and stress amplitude during measurement.
