Recently, the influence of external electric fields on microphase-separated block copolymers has been studied intensively. So far these experiments have been conducted in the melt state and therefore, due to the high viscosity, are limited with respect to the molecular weight and the size of the domains to be oriented. In addition, high temperatures close to the decomposition temperature and electric field strengths of up to 25 kV/mm are required to achieve high degrees of orientation [1]. Based on previous work by Le Meur et al. [2] we introduce a method to orient an ABC triblock copolymer (poly(styrene)-b-poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate), Mn = 82000 g/mol) from solution by solvent evaporation at room temperature under the influence of an external electric field (1.8 kV/mm). We obtain up to 1 mm thick films with lamellar domains highly oriented parallel to the electric field vector, as shown by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
