X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been applied to study the embedding of Au and Cu nanoclusters into Bisphenol-A-Polycarbonate (BPA-PC) and into polystyrene with different molecular weight and film thickness. It was shown that the temperature dependence of the embedding depth can be used to determine the glass-transition temperature at the polymer surface. We found a depression of the surface glass transition temperature compared with that of the bulk sample. This temeprature was measured as a function of molecular weight, film thickness and heating rate.
