Polarization analysis of the Raman scattering of chain molecules in nanoporous confinement — •H. Goering, K. W. Brzezinka, and A. Schoenhals — Bundesanstalt fuer Materialforschung und -pruefung, Unter den Eichen 87, 12205 Berlin
Polarized Raman scattering studies are employed to study the conformations of oligomeric poly(propylene) glycol melts of different molecular weights (MW=1000, 2000, 3000 and 5000) including also the monomeric liquid propylene glycol. Investigations are carried out on both bulk samples and material confined to nanoporous glasses (pore sizes 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 20 nm). A detailed analysis of the depolarization ratio of the antisymmetric methyl valence vibration in dependence on the molecular weight and on the pore size leads to the conclusion that chains are more stretched in the smaller pores.
