Raman spectroscopy of thin films of polyfluorenes (PF’s) with n-octyl, deuterated n-octyl, ethylhexyl, dimethyloctyl, methylbutyl side chains were carried out. Isolating vibrational modes of specific substituent groups enable us to discuss the side chain dependence of certain Raman bands. In case of n-octyl and deuterated n-octyl side chains several bands were observed to shift with annealing, which indicates a change of the polymer backbone conformation. Polarized micro-measurements were performed with drawn PF-fibres - revealing a high degree of orientation, i.e. highly parallel-oriented chains without appearance of a domain structure. Based on the three independent polarization measurements it was possible to identify additional features in the spectra, being strongly correlated to the conformation of the polymeric chains.
