Direct and converse piezoelectric measurement techniques for the characterization of electromechanical polymers — •Reinhard Schwödiauer, Gerhard S. Neugschwandtner, Michael Lindner, Harald Salhofer, Simona Bauer-Gogonea, and Siegfried Bauer — Applied Physics, Johannes-Kepler University Linz
The comprehensive characterization of piezoelectric materials, especially of thin piezoelectric polymer films, can be achieved only if different complementary methods of measurements are applied. We discuss and compare several experimental techniques suitable for piezoelectric investigations such as quasistatic measurements of the direct piezoelectric effect by means of applying a discrete load or a continuous pressure on the sample. The converse piezoelectric effect, i. e. the electric-field induced change of thickness, is measured under quasistatic conditions by dielectric dilatometry or by using a commercial stylus profilometer. Dynamic investigations in the frequency domain are performed with a LCR-meter. Piezoelectric and electrostrictive responses are separated with a highly sensitive interferometer technique. Experimental results will be reported for the new class of smart, heterogeneous space-charge electromechanical polymers. Work supported by the FWF.
