Local measurements of sliding friction and stick-slip with quartz resonators in the time domain — •Steffen Berg and Diethelm Johannsmann — Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Ackermannweg 10, 55128 Mainz, Germany
On the microscopic scale sliding friction is usually accompanied by stick-slip motion, resulting in strong nonlinearities. In order to investigate these nonlinearities we monitored the motion of a freely vibrating quartz shear resonator (12 MHz) in the time domain while approaching a small sphere.
We extracted both the resonance parameters (frequency, bandwidth and amplitude) and the Fourier components of the oscillation.
When the sphere touches the quartz plate the 3rd harmonic signal displays spikes and steps which we attribute to stick-slip and a locking-in of the relative motion.
