Welding is a common technique in link formation between plastic parts. Via interdiffusion of the polymer chains an interface of a certain width is developing dependent on annealing time [1]. In previous experiments a correlation between interface width and fracture toughness measured by the Double Cantilever Beam method (DCB) was found [2]. With this method energy is not only placed in the propagation of the crack along the interface but also in the formation of a plastic zone around the crack tip. To get an insight in the various failure mechanisms of the interface we additionally investigated structure formation in this zone by means of Scanning-USAX and Scanning-Microfocus-SAXS. The observed scattering pattern show a strong dependency on the position in the plastic zone. Further analysis is leading to different slopes in the log-log presentation of the data. This can be interpreted by scattering from certain defect structures [3].
