Mesoscopic structured composites are prominent candidates for solar energy conversion and photochemistry reactors when they are able to convert optical energy into large distance charge separation. The charge transport can be drawn via several steps for instance directed through a membrane or in direction to a reaction center. Three types of composites for this aim are introduced: Layer-by-layer deposited films, dendrimeric macromolecules, and stabilized micelles. In all three systems the functional subunits were spectroscopically characterized in advance in view of their electron transfer reaction under variable conditions.
We applied excited state absorption (ESA) spectroscopy as a powerful tool to detect charge separated states as well as ionized photoproducts. In this way, appropriate electron transfer systems can be selected. Moreover every step of the charge transport path can be followed in its temporal evolution. Thereby within the multiple step reaction those steps with low efficiency can be recognized in order to optimize them specifically.
