Electron Spin Quantum Computing With Endohedral Fullerenes — •Wolfang Harneit, M. Waiblinger, K. Lips, C. Meyer, and A. Weidinger — Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin
We propose to use the electron spin of N@C60 as a new type of qubit for scalable solid state quantum computing.
Endohedrally trapped nitrogen in C60 displays a spectacularly sharp S=3/2 electron paramagnetic resonance pattern in both the liquid and the solid state. N@C60 has a long electron spin decoherence time of T2>20 µs independent of temperature, allowing for sufficient time to manipulate spin information using conventional EPR pulses. Dipole-dipole coupling of adjacent endohedral fullerenes can be as large as 50 MHz, providing a convenient way to propagate spin information.
On the other hand, the accurate placement of fullerenes on a surface using an STM tip is already feasible. Moreover, chemical modifications of the fullerene cage do not affect the stability of the endohedral atom and allow for fine-tuning of the spin properties. This opens the route to chemically tailored arrangements of quasi-free electron spin chains useful for quantum computing.
