Dynamics of femtosecond laser ablation studied by time- and > space-resolved optical interferometry — •Vasily V. > The dynamics of laser ablation of solids by ultrashort pulses is > studied by means of time- and space-resolved optical > interferometry. The technique allows detection of transient > surface deformations in a range of a few nanometers with a > temporal resolution of about 100 femtoseconds. Close to the > ablation threshold we observe the formation of a sharp ablation > front towards vacuum with typical expansion velocities of about > 100-1000 m/s, in accordance with previously reported results [1]. > In particular we compare the behavior below and above the > ablation threshold. > [1] K. Sokolowski-Tinten et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 224 > (1998) >
