When focusing ultra-intense laser pulses on thin foils a great number (up to 1013) of ions is accelerated to energies between 100 keV and several MeV/nucleon. This is caused by quasistatic electric fields (∝ TV/m) created on the back surface of the target. In our experiments the 100-TW laser at LULI, Paris (I > 1019 W/cm2, 30 J on target), is used to shoot Au, Al, CH, and a number of coated targets to accelerate different ion species. For the first time detailed ion energy spectra for different masses and charge states of laser driven MeV-ions are presented. Regardless of the target material, contaminating protons are always dominantly accelerated. These protons shield the fields for the heavier ions obstructing their effective acceleration. A method surpressing the protons and thus enhancing the ion acceleration is proposed and first results are presented. Especially these feature may prove of interest concerning future applications like laser driven ion sources and particle accelerators. The project is sponsored by the DFG (Nr. Ha 1101/7)
