Investigation of the source of surface detonations by laser diagnostics — •Thomas Kasch, Reinhold Wendler, Bodo Dr.rer.nat. Plewinsky, and Hartmut Dr.rer.nat. Hieronymus — Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, BAM, Berlin

Oxidation processes are of particular importance for the chemical industry. If an organic liquid is oxidised by pure oxygen or air with an elevated amount of oxygen under elevated pressure, then it is difficult to control the process for safety reasons. Particular risks arise from heterogeneous detonations that can be observed even if the composition of the gas phase is below the lower explosion limit. It is intended to take high speed photographs based on a method using laser induced fluorescence (LIF). The pictures are to be taken before, during, and directly after a detonative combustion reaction. The results are to give information about the source of and the mechanism of surface detonations. In these measurements the dependence of the concentration of the solvent in the gas phase and the dependence of the partial pressure of the solvent on the initial oxygen pressure are to be determined. The experimental set up and first results are presented.
