Investigations of bubble detonations in organic solvents — •Konstantinos Mitropetros1, Hartmut Hieronymus1, Hansjörg Seeger1, Jörg Steinbach2, and Bodo Plewinsky11Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing — 2Technical University of Berlin

The safety aspects of systems consisting of pure oxygen bubbles inside organic solvents like cyclohexane and toluene under elevated pressures are still not adequately investigated and described. The explosion behaviour of such bubbly liquids is of practical interest since such systems are commonly used in technical oxidation processes. Special aspects of the planned investigations include the definition and measurement of explosion parameters as well as the investigation of the mechanism of the bubble detonation. These investigations are part of a research project which is supported by DFG and aims at developing new testing procedures for the the risk assesment of such bubbly systems in the chemical industry. For the planned investigations a shock wave created in the gas phase above the bubbly liquid is used to ignite it. The propagation of this shock wave as well as the resulting bubble detonations and the respective shock waves are to be visualised by high speed shadow photography or schlieren technique. The experimental arrangement and first experiments are presented.
