Electronic Absorption Spectra of Small Silicon-Carbon Clusters in the Gas Phase — •Sergei Raikov and Victor Burakov — Institute of Molecular and Atomic Physics, 220072 Minsk, Belarus

Electronic Absorption Spectra of Small Silicon-Carbon Clusters in the Gas Phase V.S.Burakov, S.N.Raikov While some progress has been made in the last decade to learn theoretically about the ground and excited electronic states of small silicon-carbon clusters and their ions, information about their optical spectra has been much more difficult to obtain. Experimental observation both in absorption and emission of the electronic transitions in the UV-visible range of SimCn has generally met with large difficulties.

The maximum sensitive absorption method such as intracavity laser spectroscopy is of great value in such measurements. The cluster beams in the cavity of a probing dye laser are produced by laser ablation of a target (high-purity pressed silicon-graphite powder or silicon plate and graphite rod as the reference samples) into a continuous flow of He or Ar buffer gas.

For the combined silicon-graphite target at optimized intensity of vaporization laser the specific conditions can be formed in the ablation plume when small Sim, Cn and SimCn will be produced by particle growth in a recombination mechanism. Analyses of recorded intracavity spectra have made it possible to pick out a number of previously unobserved absorption bands that belong to the electronic transitions of SimCn.
