Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) grown carbon nanotubes were etched chemically, providing short multi-walled nanotubes capsules, which are mostly open-ended. Carbon shell encapsulated metal nanoparticles were obtained by purification of single-walled nanotub material. Further derivatisation on the carbon nanotubes was achieved by using the reactivity of the carboxylic acid groups in order to attach the nanotubes to amino-terminated latex beads. The latex beads can then be trapped in an optical tweezer, which gives the possibility to move them and the attached nanotubes in a controlled way.
