Single-wall (SWNT) and multi-wall (MWNT) carbon nanotubes were grown in a gas phase process and on supported metal catalyst particles on a Si wafer, respectively by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). In the MWNT case films of vertically aligned and non-aligned were obtained from common precursor molecules. The CVD method was also used for the growth of nanotubes patterns on the Si substrate, on pre-deposited metal catalyst patterns.
The characterization of the carbon nanotube films was made using electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). Field emission properties were studied and related to the structure of the nanotube films.
