Structure and Reactivity of Laser Generated Carbon Clusters — •Christian Lenski and Adalbert Ding — Technische Universiät Berlin, Optisches Institut, Strasse des 17. Juni 135, 10623 Berlin, Germany

A wide range of carbon cluster ions (C2+ to C1000+) have been produced by laser evaporation. Time-of-flight mass spectra of these cluster ions have been taken using a variety of laser intensities. Mass distributions exhibiting a lognormal shape have been obtained displaying a number of maxima whose intensities and positions strongly depend on the laser fluence. These maxima are assigned to different geometries of the clusters and fullerenes. The analysis of the spectrum allows us to assign different geometries (chain structures, ring structures, cage structures)to these maxima. We find mostly multiple ring structures and only a small percentage of onion-like structures. These findings are strengthened by the observation that reaction products are found for all sizes of carbon clusters when the reactand is a fluorine containing compound. In contrast to the reaction with hydrogen only one fluorine atom is transferred to the carbon cluster independend of cluster size.
