Different fullerene blacks were produced by the arc-discharge vaporization of graphite elektrodes under various experimental conditions. Pressed pellets of these materials were coverd with nanoscopic films of Ni, Co and Mo. After the following pyrolysis at temperatures between 800 K and 1500 K electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was applied. Wormlike nanostructures grew from those parts of the Ni-covered pellets which contained measurable quantities of fullerenes.Transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy showed that chains of metal free hollow, elongated carbon nanostructures with diameter between 35 and 100 nm were grown. A model for the formation of the chains is proposed considering diffusion of carbon through a metal particle with subsequent growth from the cooler part of the metal particle
