Experiments on surface interactions of molecular and cluster ions have been carried out on a tandem mass spectrometer consisting of a double focusing mass spectrometer in combination with a surface collision chamber and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer for secondary ion analysis. Results have been obtained for collisions of acetonitrile molecular cations CH3CN+, protonated acetonitrile cations CH3CNH+ and acetonitrile clusters (CH3CN)n+, n = 1-3, and with molecular (C2H5OH+) and protonated ((C2H5OH)H+) ethanol cations, as well as protonated ethanol clusters, (C2H5OH)nH+, n = 2,3 with a hydrocarbon covered stainless steel surface in the energy range of 5 to 70 eV. Besides hydrogen pick-up reactions from surface adsorbates, surface-induced molecular dissociations and surface-induced catalytic isomerization reactions, we have also detected and studied intracluster reactions and unimolecular cluster dissociation reactions introduced by surface impact. The different processes could be distinguished and studied in detail by using also deuterated molecules for cluster production. Project partially supported by ÖAW and BMWF, Wien, Austria.
