Scanning tunneling microscopy of Bacteriochlorophyll and Astaxanthin — •Holger Möltgen and Karl Kleinermanns — Institut für Physikalische Chemie I, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf
Chlorosomes of green bacteria contain large amounts of light harvesting complexes. Bacteriochlorophyll (BCC - extracted from helicobacter pylori) has been deposited on graphite and molybdenum sulfide by different methods of preparation. We focus on the characterisation of the H-bridge-bonded associates, which play an important role in energy transfer and charge separation on surfaces. Our results show, that BCC can build large aggregates consisting of dimer or tetramer subunits even without the natural proteins. The formation of monomers, dimer or tetramer aggregates depend on the polarity of the solvent used.
