Far-infrared laser and cavity ringdown — •Robert Schiwon, Erik Bruendermann, Gerhard Schwaab, Andreas Bergner, and Martina Havenith-Newen — Physikalische Chemie II, Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum, 44780 Bochum, Germany

We present a Ge-laser system capable of producing radiation in the far-infared with powers up to 1W. The laser is operated at temperatures of less than 20K and requires a magnetic field perpendicular to an applied electric field for operation. The frequencies accessible with this laser range from 1 to 4 THz which is an interesting spectral region for research on hydrogen bonded systems, e.g. proteins. Presently efforts are being made to improve the spectral resolution of this tunable laser. With these improvements the Ge-laser promises to be an interesting source of radiation for a wide range of applications. Our aim is the combination of this laser with a cavity ringdown cell designed for the far-infrared. This should open up the possibility for highly sensitive measurements in this spectral region, previously not achievable.
