UV/Optical and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy of Trifluoromethyl iodide — •Paul Kendall and Nigel Mason — University College London, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT, United Kingdom

Trifluoromethyl iodide is a gas used for two purposes. Firstly it is used as a fire extinguisher in applications where the environmentally damaging halons were previously used. Secondly it is used in the plasma etching of integrated circuits, a technique that has rendered traditional wet chemical processes obsolete. We have measured the absorption cross sections of trifluoromethyl iodide (CF3I) in the range of 4 to 18 eV using Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) together with UV photoabsorption readings using a UV/Vis spectrometer. Comparison is made between the electron impact and photoabsorption spectra. In addition, the photolysis of the compound has been studied and found to lead to short lifetimes in the atmosphere.
