VUV absorption and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy of Trifluoromethyl sulfur pentafluoride — •Paul Kendall and Nigel Mason — University College London, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Gower Street, London, WC1E 6BT, United Kingdom
Trifluoromethyl sulfur pentafluoride is a potentially important
gas in global warming due to its large infrared absorbance. We
have measured the absorption cross sections of trifluoromethyl
sulfur pentafluoride (SF5CF3)for the first time in the
range of 8 to 22 eV using Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS)
together with VUV photoabsorption data using the Daresbury
synchrotron radiation source. The EELS spectrum of sulfur
hexaluoride (SF6) was also measured to allow comparison of
the two compounds. Similarities are observed between the spectra
of the two compounds with the two spectra showing similar peaks in
the range between 11 and 15 eV . The photolysis of the compounds
have been studied and found to lead to long lifetimes in the
atmosphere.
