The study of electronically highly excited, short-lived molecular
states using resonant Auger spectroscopy (RAS) provides a way to monitor
molecular processes on the low femtosecond scale. By measuring the Auger
Doppler effect characteristic dissociation time can be obtained, like for
O2. In the Auger Doppler effect electrons, ejected after dissociation,
are detected bearing additional kinetic energy from the emitting
fragment.
In the here presented study the Auger Doppler method was used for HF.
The excitation energy was detuned around the resonance
F1s→4σ thus monitoring the dynamics of the fragments. The
photon energy difference relative to the resonance energy leads to
variation in the kinetic energy of the fragments. A model including total
energy arguments and experimental geometry is compared to the experimental
data and found to be in good agreement. The presented measurements were
undertaken at the MAX II storage ring, MAX-lab in Lund, Sweden.
