The metastability of H3 in the para form (I=1/2) is exploited in a
photoexcitation study to investigate the vibronic structure of this
molecule.
From the rovibrational energy
level positions of the doubly degenerate 3pE′ electronic state we
suggest
a novel interaction mechanism
between the upper and the lower Jahn-Teller sheet of this state.
Vibronic interactions in the 3pE′ state were also investigated by
measuring
high Rydberg states in a two photon excitation scheme[1,2].
Lifetime measurements[3] of low
Rydberg states of H3 give further information on coupling
mechanisms
between singly excited Rydberg states as well as possible crossings with
the
lowest repulsive doubly excited states of H3. A theoretical
investigation
of the dynamics of the Rydberg states based on the ab initio
potential energy surfaces will be presented at the conference.
