The N 1s photoelectron spectrum of gaseous nitrogen was measured with an apparatus resolution sufficient to spectroscopically separate the two N 1s (1σ) components of gerade and ungerade symmetry. The selective amplification of the gerade component on the σ shape-resonance was clearly observed. This corroborates the assignment of this resonance as 3σu*. The observed value for the energy difference beween the two states is 97(3) meV. By that, a description of the remaining N2+ 1s vacancy states as delocalized over both atomic nuclei appears to be a better approximation to the true states than the localized description often chosen a priori.
