Optical low temperature microscopy with a parabolic mirror — •A. Drechsler, M.A. Lieb, C. Debus, and A.J. Meixner — Physikalische Chemie, Universität Siegen, D-57076 Siegen

A concave parabolic Al-mirror with high numerical aperture is used as a highly efficient light collection device in a confocal microscope setup. This leads to the following specific advantages: Beside a tight diffraction limited focus and an easy implementation into a cryogenic environment for temperatures below 1.8 K, the mirror has minimal chromatic aberrations and a high reflectivity over a large spectral range.

The capabilities of the setup could be demonstrated by several single molecule experiments on the Shpol’skii system terrylene in octadecane, namely spatial imaging as well as high resolution absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy.
