Dendrimers are highly symmetrical macromolecules of nanometer scale consisting of branching units attached to a central, polyfunctional core. Dendrimers find applications as catalysts, in drug-targeting, etc. Due to the flexibility of their branches, dendrimers cannot easily be crystallized for diffraction studies of their structure. Therefore, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been used to analyze surfaces with submonolayer coverage of dendrimers. We succeeded in imaging single chiral dendrimers as well as dendrimers with a porphyrin core with the STM by applying a special preparation technique. Investigations at low temperature (4.2 K) additionally allowed to study clusters of two or several of these dendrimers.
