Ion-molecule reactions of state selected HCl+ ions — •Marcus Malow, Klaus Brembs, and Karl-Michael Weitzel — Institut für Chemie - Physikalische und Theoretische Chemie,Freie Universität Berlin, Takustr. 3, 14195 Berlin, Germany
Ion-molecule reactions are of significant importance for natural as well as technical discharge processes, astrochemistry and ion edging. For a quantitative understanding of the underlying chemical processes, the study of state selected ion-molecule reactions appears most interesting. In this work we present first results of the ion-molecule reactions of state selected HCl+ ions with several molecules. The reaction of HCl+ + Ethene [1] is dominated by charge transfer with a high cross section of 40 Angs.2. In the reactions of HCl+ with CO2 [1] and CO [2] only proton transfer is observed, with formation of HOCO+ and HCO+ ions. The rate constants are close to the Langevin-limit. The prospects of controlling chemical reactions by the external rotation of a molecule will be discussed.
