The question of
localisation or delocalisation of inner-shell core-holes has not
been solved entirely yet. Recent studies of the O 1s
states of CO2 [1] show, that the core holes localise by
excitation of an antisymmetrical molecular vibration. This
mechanism is also expected to occur in the C 1 s
excitation of ethane and ethene. However, in these molecules due
to their small energetic difference symmetrical and
antisymmetrical vibration cannot be resolved properly. Therefore
additional information on the respective coupling constants was
obtained by measurements of the deuterated isotopomers (C2D4, C2H2D2, C2D6, and C2H3D3) under
identical experimental conditions. The spectra were fitted with
different linear coupling models taking into account
post-collision-interaction to yield the experimental coupling
constants. In this presentation we delineate in detail how these
can be connected to the degree of dynamical localisation of the
core holes.
