Towards establishing the resolution limit of PFI-ZEKE photoelectron spectroscopy — •Urs Hollenstein, Robert Seiler, and Frédéric Merkt — Laboratorium für Physikalische Chemie, ETH Zürich, CH-8092 Zürich, Switzerland

A broadly tunable laser system in the extreme ultraviolet with a bandwidth of 0.008 cm−1 has been developed for use in high-resolution pulsed-field-ionisation zero-kinetic-energy (PFI-ZEKE) threshold photoelectron spectroscopy.

A methodology based on tailored sequences of pulsed electric fields has been implemented that enables PFI-ZEKE photoelectron spectra to be measured at a resolution of 0.06 cm−1. The method relies on the dependence of the ionisation rate of Stark states on the parabolic quantum numbers.

PFI-ZEKE spectra of the argon atom will be presented. These spectra have also been simulated theoretically on a quantitative basis; the theoretic framework required to understand these new results will be discussed.
