Using a recently constructed high resolution electron ionization instrument, consisting of a hemispherical electron monochromator and a quadrupole mass spectrometer, we have studied the ionization efficiency threshold behavior of singly- and multiply-charged rare gas atoms (Ne, Xe) and of singly charged stoichiometric and non-stoichiometric nitrogen cluster ions [(N2)n]+ (n=1...20) and (N2)n N+ (n=0...3). Proper analysis of these data (after energy scale calibration using the decay of the ((2s)2(2p))2P compound state of He-) with a recently developed method yields corresponding ionization energies which are compared with literature data where available. The present data, in particular concerning the nitrogen cluster ions give new insight in the underlying ionization mechanism. Work supported by OEAW / EURATOM Association and FWF, Wien.
