Inelastic atomic collisions at low energies are of both fundamental and practical importance. The most widely used approach for cross section calculations is based on the standard adiabatic approximation. However, within this approximation the nuclear dynamics treatment encounters a severe difficulty. The matrix elements coupling different electronic states can remain nonzero at large internuclear distance. The occurence of nonvanishing asymptotic couplings reflects a less obvious but more fundamental shortcoming. The coordinates used in the standard adiabatic approximation are not suited for the description of the free atoms, and the corresponding representation of the asymptotic wave function appears to be incorrect. We present a new approach to the electron translation problem at low-energy collisions in the framework of a full quantum mechanical treatment. It applies to radial [1] as well as rotational coupling mechanisms.
