Direct observation of three dimensional product momentum distribution — •T. Einfeld, A. Chichinin, C. Maul und K.-H. Gericke — Universität Braunschweig, FB Chemie, Hans-Sommer-Str.10, 38106 Braunschweig
The three-dimensional (3D) velocity distribution of a reaction product provides complete information about the chemical reaction. As one application, the three-body processes which govern complex chemical reactions including atmospheric chemistry can be understood entirely by examining the spatially and temporally resolved photodissociation products. The novel technique is a combination of two well-known principles which are applied to one product molecule, the one being the resonance enhanced multi-photon / time of flight technique (REMPI-TOF) to obtain the speed distribution of a single reaction product in one dimension and a position sensitive detector (PSD) to obtain the exact position of the same arriving particle and thus the speed distribution in the remaining two dimensions. Experimental results concerning the photodissociation of COCl2, SCCl2 and S2Cl2, will be presented. The competing two and three body channels and its mechanisms will be discussed. This classification scheme is of special importance to atmospheric chemistry.
