Final State Correlations in the Laser-Photofragmentation of H3 — •Ulrich Galster, Patrick Kaminski, Hanspeter Helm, and Ulrich Müller — Fakultät für Physik, Universität Freiburg, Stefan-Meier-Str. 19, D-79104 Freiburg

We investigate the dissociation of laser-excited H3 molecules by the Freiburg fast-beam photofragment spectrometer. Metastable triatomic hydrogen molecules are produced by charge transfer neutralization of H3+ ions and excited to low principal quantum number (n=3) Rydberg states by an intracavity dye laser. Neutral fragments are detected in coincidence by a time- and position-sensitive multihit-detector. We observe two-body decay into H+H2(v,J) fragment pairs as well as three-body decay into H(1s)+H(1s)+H(1s). For each event, the c. m. momenta of all fragments are determined. We find strong correlations in the final state distributions. They sensitively depend not only on the electronic but also on the vibrational excitation of the H3 initial state. Results for the 3s 2A1′, 3d 2E″, and 3p 2E′ electronic states in the vibrational ground, symmetric-stretch, and degenerate mode excited states will be presented. The predissociation mechanisms and the decay dynamics on the repulsive ground state surface will be discussed.
