The 3p photoemission of free Ti atoms has been studied using synchrotron radiation of the storage ring BESSY II in Berlin.
The 3p−1 electron spectrum of Ti is dominated by a strong 3p−3d interaction. It also shows extensively broadened low-spin states. This term dependent lifetime and the strong 3p−3d interaction can also be seen in the 3p spectra of other 3d transition metals. We have done Hartree-Fock calulations which support our findings.
