Measurement of 36Cl in lakes — •V. Lazarev1, A. Blinov2, Th. Huber1, F. Kubo1, and E. Nolte11Fakultät für Physik, E15, TU München — 2St. Petersburg State Technical University, Russia

The 36Cl deposition fluxes, experimentally determined by measurements of this isotope in annual precipitations at the locations, distributed over a wide range of latitudes, showed a significant discrepancy over the fluxes, calculated from cosmic ray induced production in the atmosphere. To explain the observed difference the recycling of nuclear bomb produced 36Cl as an additional source of 36Cl is suggested. The hypothesis is to be checked by measuring 36Cl concentrations in lakes with long flushing times, operating as integrating systems. The first measurements have been performed. The results are in good agreement with the expected values. In Alpine lakes with flushing times of about 10 years the contribution of 36Cl, produced by Chernobyl accident, is prevailing. In contrast, in the lakes with longer flushing times the natural and the bomb-produced input are dominant.
