Analysis of Organic Compounds in Soil by Resonant Laser-Ionisation and Time-of-Flight-Mass-Spectrometry — •Ronald Weishaeupl and Ulrich Boesl — TU Muenchen,Lichtenbergstr.4,85748 Garching
For many analytical problems on-line and on-site analysis is highly desirable, e.g. in case of chemical accidents or screening of contaminated industrial areas. The fast and mobile in-situ detection of organic compounds (especially polycyclic hydrocarbons (PAH))in soil samples is of particular interest in environmental analysis. The combination of laser desorption (LD),laser-ionisation (LI) and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) is very promising for this purpose. By this method extensive sample preparation is reduced or even avoided. In particular, LD of neutral molecules from such complex matrices as soil had to be investigated in detail. In a very compact and easy-to handle set-up the laser-desorbed neutral molecules were transported into the ion source by a pulsed gas beam. Involving medium-resolution UV-spectroscopy in the ionisation process even allows isomer-sensitive PAH-monitoring. PAH-containing soil samples have been investigated, which were either certified reference samples or spiked laboratory samples. For semi-selective ionisation of PAHs the 4th harmonic of a Nd:YAG laser (266 nm) was used, for isomer-sensitive detection a tuneable OPO-laser system was applied.
