Multiply Charged Metal Cluster Anions — •Alexander Herlert, Lutz Schweikhard, and Manuel Vogel — Institut für Physik, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, D-55099 Mainz, Germany
Singly charged nobel metal clusters are produced in a laser vaporization source and transferred into a Penning trap. After size selection the clusters are subjected to an electron bath in the trap, which results in the attachment of further electrons. The relative abundance of produced dianions or trianions is analyzed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The observed threshold sizes for the appearance of the doubly and triply charged species are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. In addition the relative dianion yield as a function of the clusters’ size shows a pronounced resistance to electron attachment for singly charged anions with a closed electronic shell, which correlates very well with calculations of the respective electron affinities. The production process is further under inverstigation and the detachment of one surplus electron from dianionic noble metal clusters is currently studied by use of collisional activation and photoexcitation.
