The Penning trap mass spectrometer ISOLTRAP at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE/CERN is dedicated to high-precision mass measurements of radioactive nuclides. A measurement of the true cyclotron frequency of the ions in the electromagnetic Penning trap yields mass determinations with typical relative precisions of δ m m ≈ 10−7. By measuring the masses of 33Ar and 74Rb, we have shown that nuclides with half-lives well below one second [T1 2(33 Ar) = 174 ms, T1 2(74 Rb) = 65 ms] can be measured in Penning traps with a relative precision of δ m m ≈ 3 · 10−7. Furthermore, we have been able to measure the masses of 34Ar and 74−78Kr with a relative precision of δ m m ≈ 3 · 10−8. The masses of these nuclides are important in the systematic study of superallowed β decays which are essential for testing the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis as well as the unitarity of the CKM matrix.
