Investigation of the laser ablation of ceramic samples of nitrides of boron, silicon, and aluminium — •T. Atwee und H.-J. Kunze — Institut für Experimentalphysik V, Ruhr-Universität Bochum

Laser ablation of ceramic samples of nitrides of boron, silicon and aluminium as target was performed by the interaction of 20 ns, 3 J pulses from a ruby laser. The depth of the holes was measured after 20 laser pulses at the same position for the three kinds of ceramic sample. Optical microscope images show that the drilling effect is much higher in boron nitride due to the lower hardness than in the other two samples silicon nitride and aluminium nitride. The depth of the hole drilled in boron nitride (density 1.90 g/cm3, hardness 205) was 2 mm after 20 laser pulses, while it was 0.4 mm in the case of silicon nitride (density 3.18 gm/cm3, hardness 2200) and < 0.1mm for aluminium nitride (density 3.26 gm/cm3, hardness 1200). The expanding plasma plumes of silicon nitride and aluminium nitride are studied spectroscopically in the wavelength range from 80 Å to 230 Å and are compared with that obtained for boron nitride. The evolution of the plasma plumes was investigated with a gated pinhole camera.
